Drama student hopes for acceptance to drama school

Chance Pettigrew, a senior at Little Wound HS, wants to help pave the way for more Native American actors. Too few indigenous actors are called upon for key roles in major movies. It is time for Hollywood to look towards Indian Country to fulfill Native roles in feature films. Chance’s lifetime ambition is to be an actor. He plans to attend an institution of performing arts. To do this he must audition and demonstrate his acting ability before a panel. The competition will be tough but Chance is ready to meet the challenge. So far, Chance has auditioned for the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) held in Chicago, Illinois. While there, Chance had the opportunity to view a professionally done 5 hour play, 2666, at the Goodman Theatre in downtown Chicago. He commented, “It was the most amazing show ever.” On March 12, Chance will be auditioning for the University of Nebraska in Lincoln (UNL) and will then travel to Minneapolis to audition for the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) out of New York City and Hollywood. Chance has prepared three monologues for these auditions. One from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliette, another from McDonagh’s dark contemporary comedy The Pillowman and the third from Native American playwright Anthony Rolo’s Mama Earth Loves Lace. ┬áBreak a leg Chance!
