Superintendent's Message

It is my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to Little Wound School for the 2018-2019 school year and to those students and parents new to our school, WELCOME!

Since July 2017, I have been honored to serve as the Superintendent of Little Wound School. It is a privilege to be a part of a community where parents, teachers and students care for each other and strive to build positive relationships that support academic, social and cultural growth.

As an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, I have been involved with BIE Operated Schools and Tribal Grant Schools since 2003. Coming back to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation as a school leader is an important process of giving back to our tribe as education is the key to the future success of our students at Little Wound School.

As Little Wound School moves toward a trauma informed school approach to education it is important to have increased overall communication with all of our stakeholder’s with priority given to the students, parents, teachers, and administration. In order for our school to meet the individual needs of the students, we have increased our counseling staff, increased our professional development to all members of the LWS school organization, to get informed and get involved in improving our trauma approach to education with the ultimate goal of improving our educational services. This organizational approach to become a trauma informed school will be supplemented by a five year federal grant. This organizational change will be challenging, but with the effort and support of the school board, administration, teachers and support staff we look forward to working with your child and family in this approach to meet our school mission of providing a sacred environment for students to achieve academic and Lakota language and cultural excellence.

As demands and complexities of teaching children increase, it becomes more evident that we all need to work together to insure that our children reach their full potential.

We believe that all of us, the school and the community, must work together in an extended family environment to insure success for all our students. We believe it is everyone's responsibility to empower children with the creative, intellectual, and decision-making skills necessary for them to become academically, socially, culturally, physically, and emotionally successful and responsible.  With that in mind, you are invited to be an active participant at Little Wound School. School research clearly demonstrates that parent participation in their child's school coincides with a greater likelihood of academic success for their child.

It is our desire to keep you informed of all that is taking place at school. We hope that you will find our website helpful and informative. All of the information we send home can also be found on the website as well as the dates for events and activities in the "calendar' feature of the website.

We look forward to having a long and rewarding relationship with you and your family. I can be reached at my direct office line 605-455-6217, school cell phone 605-407-1203 or email [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns.

Respectfully,
Charles Cuny, Jr.
Superintendent
